This refers to Frank Herbert's novel Dune and its sequels, set on the planet Arrakis.
Arrakis is a desert world which produces a unique spice called Melange - which staves off the onset of old age. Hence, the planet is very significant and is a pawn in the politics of the Galactic Empire. Dune tells the story of how House Atreides overcomes the treachery in the highest councils of the Empire to establish its rule and control of both Arrakis and the empire itself.

I consider Dune to be the ultimate book
about the relationship between science, technology,
politics and ecology. The film Dune featured such luminaries as Sting, and while it was a
valient attempt, it did not do justice to the book. Frank
Herbert has since gone on to be a very successful
horror writer.
Amazon lists this as a special 25th anniversary edition, whatever that means!
As with so many classic books, there are sequels to Dune that just don't live up to the magnificence of the first book. Here is a list of the further Dune books, although we don't really recommend them:
