PICTURES OF THE WEEK: INFRARED JUPITER
by Hazed
The Hubble Space Telescope gets pointed at Jupiter at regular intervals, to help undertstand the planet’s cloud motions and to assist the Juno spacecraft in its understanding of what it sees.
Here is an infrared images taken in 2016, showing the different cloud heights and latitudes in the various colours: https://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap180221.html
Juno also takes infrared images, and this second picture uses the thermal emission from the Jovian cloud tops to construct a view of the cyclones at the planet’s North Pole: https://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap180308.html
