DUMB CRIMINALS OF THE WEEK: OVER-DRESSED AND OVER-DRIVEN

by Hazed

Two criminals are behind bars after a botched raid on a jewellers which was so inept the attempted crime was likened to a Laurel and Hardy caper.

Mervin Chong and Colin Ayers started out by planning a smash and grab raid on a jewellers with meticulous detail. They took pictures of their proposed target, a jewellery store in Ramsgate in Kent, England, from which they planned to steal expensive watches.

Then they concealed their identities by dressing in dark coats, masks, balaclavas and hoodies. But all of this meant that when they mounted their chosen robbery vehicle – a moped – they couldn’t put crash helmets on.

Ayres was driving the moped, with Chong as a passenger behind him. Ayres carryied the implement they intended to use to break into the store: a pickaxe. But he had to put it between his legs as he rode. As the two began circling the jewellers, they were so conspicuous that four separate people called the police before their raid could even begin.

Just as they were about to start their fearless break-in, the police arrived. In a panic to escape, Ayres managed to steer the moped into a lamppost. They ran off on foot but one of them ran right into the arms of an off-duty police officer, leading to them both being caught.

Just in case the police were in any doubt about their intentions, they found incriminating photos of the jewellers on Ayres’ mobile phone.

Chong was sentenced to two years in jail. Ayres went on the run before he could be sentenced, but was finally arrested and sent to jail recently – with another month added to his sentence for his breach of bail.
