REAL LIFE NEWS: PIPING IN THE BEER

by Hazed

A hard rock festival being held in Germany in August wants to make absolutely sure they won’t run out of beer – so they are laying an underground beer pipeline.

Wacken Open Air (WOA) is one of the world’s biggest heavy metal events, and this year the line-up includes Megadeth and Alice Cooper (as well as many bands that I am too out of touch to have heard of). It spreads over three days and attracts about 75,000 fans each year, each of which consumes an average of nine pints of beer during their visit.

That’s a lot of beer. You do the maths.

The new four-mile network of beer pipes is intended to make the event more eco-friendly, as well as more cost effective. Beer won’t have to be delivered by trucks that churn up the fields. Instead, it will be pumped along the new underground pipeline at a rate of six glasses every six seconds.

The pipelines will also be used to deliver water to the site, and to remove waste. Well, until I read that, I was thinking that people might try to tap into the pipes to get free beer… but the risk of getting the wrong pipe is way too great!
