REAL LIFE NEWS: SEE, I TOLD YOU AFTERNOON NAPS WERE GOOD FOR YOU!

by Hazed

It turns out the Spanish have the right idea: taking a siesta after lunch does you a power of good – so long as it’s the right length. At least it does if you’re over 65.

A 60 minute nap can prevent your brain from aging and improve your performance in memory tests. But that amount of time spent napping is crucial, and if you nap for more or less time you won’t get the same benefit.

This conclusion comes from the American Health in Ageing Foundation. Researchers examined 3,000 adults over the age of 65, and discovered that those who had a 60 minute kip in the afternoon were better at solving simple maths problems, copying geometrical figures and memorising words.

People who didn’t take a nap did not perform well in the tests.

Dr Junxin Li said: “These people experienced about the same decline in their mental abilities that a five-year increase in age would be expected to cause.” He added: “Cognitive function was significantly associated with napping. Moderate nappers had better overall cognition than non-nappers or extended nappers. Non-nappers also had significantly poorer cognition than short nappers.”

I may not be over 65 yet but I could surely welcome the chance to have a little snooze after lunch. Now, I just need to get a bed in my office…
