REAL LIFE NEWS: SEE, I TOLD YOU SMILING WAS GOOD FOR YOU!

by Hazed

Women who are optimists are less likely to contract a fatal disease after their retire, a new study suggests.

Researchers looked at 70,000 women and found that those who look on the bright side were less likely to get fatal cancer, heart disease, lung conditions and strokes in their retirement years.

Some of this effect could be put down to making healthier life choices but not all, so experts believe that having a positive mental attitude is powerful in itself. What’s more, they say that those who don’t have a naturally sunny disposition can learn to be optimistic.

The study examined health data collected from a large study of female nurses in the US, both retired and still working, aged between 58 and 83. They were asked to rate how optimistic they thought themselves to be, and then were monitored for eight years, so that any disease-related deaths could be recorded.

During that time there were 4,566 deaths overall. Being highly optimistic was linked to lower death risk from a number of causes. Researchers believe that optimism may have a biological effect on the body. I assume that men would benefit as well.

So keep smiling and stay healthy longer!
