REAL LIFE NEWS: FISH-KILLING ROBOT LET LOOSE IN ATLANTIC

by Hazed

There’s a killer robot on the loose, swimming in the Atlantic, seeking out its prey and then exterminating it. But don’t worry, this isn’t part of the Rise of the Robots, it’s a prototype designed to deal with an invasive pest.

Its target is the lionfish, which is native to the Indian Ocean and the Pacific, but which has been introduced to the Atlantic by humans. The fish has no natural predator there, so its population has soared, and it’s now a threat to corals and to juvenile native fish.

So the swimming robot has been designed to hunt down lionfish and deliver and electric shock. It has been developed by a US non-profit company Robots in Service of the Environment (RISE). The aquatic droid is operated via a videolink, and when the operator spots one of the venomous lionfish he or she navigates the robot towards it. The robot grabs the fish with metallic paddles and delivers a fatal electric shock. The carcasses can then be collected – and apparently the fish is delicious!

If the tests work out RISE plans to build a more of the fish-killing robots.
