REAL LIFE NEWS: SKYDIVER JUMPS 25,000ft WITHOUT A PARACHUTE
by Hazed
A daredevil skydiver, Luke Aikins, has become the first person to jump from 25,000 feet without a parachute – at least, the first person to do it deliberately, and to survive, by landing in a net. Yikes!
The American has carried out more than 18,000 jumps in the past, but this was a first. He reached speeds of 120mph before landing in the centre of a 100x100 feet net, in Simi Valley, southern California.
(The story I read said he landed dead centre – but I think that’s an unfortunate use of words!)
Aikins spent two years training for this amazing jump. But he almost had to cancel it because he was ordered to wear a parachute for health and safety reasons. The extra weight on his back would have made his landing a lot more dangerous. However, luckily the organises lifted the ban at the last minute so he was able to go ahead with the record-breaking, and slightly crazy, jump.
