REAL LIFE NEWS: YOUNGSTERS SAVE PINS ON PHONES

by Hazed

After my report last week that 50% of people who find a memory stick would plug it into their computers, here’s a survey showing that the youth of today is shockingly lax when it comes to safeguarding the PINs for credit or debit cards. It turns out that more than 21% of 18-24 year old store the numbers on their smartphones, tablets or laptops.

The survey by Equifax and Gorkana asked 500 people about their password habits. Another of the findings from the survey was that more than a third of youngsters also use their personal devices to store online passwords.

Across all age groups, 16% store passwords, 10% store PINs, bank account numbers and sort codes, and 6% store the answers to security questions for online accounts.

I am sorry to have to tell you that women are more than twice as likely as men to use this unsafe method of storing sensitive data.

This is horrendously insecure. It leaves you vulnerable to online scams should your phone get stolen or hacked. Not to mention that if you lose your phone, you will lose all your passwords and may not be able to use your cards or online accounts without going through the hassle of getting password resets for everything.

Not a good outcome.
