REAL LIFE NEWS: VOTE WITH YOUR CIGARETTE BUTTS

The city of Boston has hit on an intriguing way to stop people littering the sidewalks with their discarded cigarette butts.
In the UK, we call them fag ends, which can be the cause of some confusion when conversing with Americans!
But I digress. In Boston, the authorities are going to install receptacles in which smokers can place their discarded butts. To encourage them to do this, the installations will be designed as mini polling stations; you cast your vote by putting your stub into one of two slots.
One of the questions Bostonians will be asked to vote on is, “Which Superpower Would You Want?” The voting options are “Flight” and “Invisibility”. (I’d go for flight, of course.)
Another one is more mundane: “Most essential Boston winter gear?” – “Hats” or “Boots.” (I can’t say I have an opinion on that burning issue.)
The idea was first used in the UK last year, when smokers outside Embankment tube station in London were asked to vote on their favourite football player, either Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi, as well as whether they’d prefer to watch the Italian Grand Prix or the Tennis US Open. I confess this initiative passed me by.
By the time you read this, the bins should be set up on the Boston streets that see heavy foot traffic. Residents are also encouraged to send in their suggestions for future questions using Twitter hashtags #NeatStreets or #NeatStreetsBos.
