REAL LIFE NEWS: SEE, I TOLD YOU CRYING AT THE MOVIES WAS GOOD FOR YOU!

by Hazed

Going to watch a sad movie and having a good weep improves your mood, says new research.

Researchers at the University of Tilburg in the Netherlands studied the emotional effects of crying. They discovered that after weeping at a film, the participants first felt depressed, then recovered to a normal state, and had an emotional boost 90 minutes later.

In the study, 60 people were shown two tear-jerking films: Life is Beautiful, about a Jewish father trying to shield his son from the horrors of life in a Nazi concentration camp, and Hachi: A Dog’s Tale, about a man who forms a bond with a stray dog. (I haven’t seen either film so I can’t comment on whether they would make me cry!)

32 of the film-goers were not moved by either film, and they didn’t get any emotional boost; but the other 28 found themselves sobbing and so got the full benefit of the mood lift.

Previous studies have noted the emotional low that follows the crying, but this is the first time the delayed emotional boost has been seen.

So it seems the old myth that you feel better after having a good cry isn’t a myth after all.
