Another day, another study claiming that eating something every day will keep you alive longer. This time the miracle food is nuts.
A study by Maastricht University in The Netherlands has found that people eating a handful of nuts or peanuts every day had a 23% lower chance of dying during the ten years they were followed.
Over 120,000 Dutch men and women aged between 55 and 69 gave their dietary and lifestyle information in 1986. Ten years later, their mortality rate was looked at. Early death due to cancer, diabetes, respiratory and neurodegenerative diseases was lower among the nut consumers.
However, the benefit is lost if you eat peanut butter – that’s high in salt and trans fats – so lay off the peanut butter and jelly sandwiches!
