REAL LIFE NEWS: CHESS CHEAT CAUGHT USING APP IN TOILET

by Hazed

Remember the first time a computer beat a human at chess? It was in 1997 that Deep Blue won a match against World Chess Champion Garry Kasparov. Since then, computing power has increased enormously, until now you can get an app on your phone that’ll give you a good game.

In fact, your phone can play chess so well, it can be used to cheat, as officials discovered at the Dubai Open tournament a few weeks ago. During a game Tigran Petrosian, a grandmaster from Armenia, became suspicious of his opponent, Gaioz Nigalidze, the national chess champion of Georgia, because he was going to the toilet very frequently.

“I informed the chief arbiter about my growing suspicions and asked him to keep an eye on Gaioz,” Petrosian said. “After my opponent left the very toilet partition yet another time, the arbiters entered it. What they found was the mobile phone with headphones; the device was hidden behind the pan and covered with toilet paper.”

The phone was running a chess app which was mirroring the game being played, and also logged onto a social networking account belonging to the Georgian player.

At first the alleged cheater denied the phone belonged to him, but officials awarded the match to his opponent, and later banned him from the tournament. He is facing an investigation by the World Chess Foundation, and could be barred from competitions for up to 15 years, as well as losing his grandmaster ranking.
