CLEVER CRIMINAL OF THE WEEK: FAKING A BAIL NOTICE

by Hazed

This week our criminal isn’t dumb at all, but quite ingenious. He managed to trick prison officers into letting him out of jail.

Neil Moore was on remand in Wandsworth prison in south London. He was accused of being a fraudster, who posed as staff from various banks in order to persuade large organisations to give him huge amounts of money, gaining almost two million pounds from his illegal activities.

Continuing with the theme of pretending to be somebody else, Neil used an illicit phone while in the jail to create a fake email account and website domain. He posed as a senior court clerk and emailed instructions to prison staff which told them to release him on bail. This trick worked, and they let him out in March of last year.

Very clever indeed! But for reasons unknown he handed himself in to the authorities three days later, so was up in court last week for the original eight counts of fraud, and one count of escaping from lawful custody. He pled guilty and will be sentenced later this month.

If he is jailed, prison staff will need to be alert for future attempts to fool them into letting him go!
