WHY IS RUDOLPH’S NOSE SO RED?

Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer had a very shiny nose, so the song tells us. But it’s not normal for a deer to have a colourful snout – they are usually black or at least dark brown. So what made Rudolph so different that the other reindeers called him names and wouldn’t let him join in their reindeer games?
Over the years scientists with too much time on their hands, or a little too much Christmas spirit inside them, have speculated and they’ve come up with lots of possible reasons. Here’s a few of them:
- Parasites. Perhaps the yuckiest reason was suggested by a Norwegian scientists who thinks the redness may be due to a parasitic infection. Ewww.
- Alcoholism. A red face is often seen in those who over-indulge in alcoholic drink, so perhaps Rudolph drinks too much.
- Allergies. Maybe he’s allergic to mince pies?
- Cold. The redness could simply be a reaction to the extreme cold at the North Pole.
