FED2 STAR FILM REVIEW: INTERSTELLAR

by Hazed

I don’t normally write reviews. I’m not a natural critic – I tend to enjoy things whole-heartedly, without looking for flaws or reasons to be picky. I find it hard to explain why I like something, I just end up burbling on about it being amazing. Not very nuanced!

Of course, if I don’t like something I am quite capable of explaining exactly what’s wrong with it. Being a negative critic is easy.

So although I’ve called this a review, it’s really more of a recommendation. I want to urge you to go and see the film Interstellar, if you haven’t already seen it.

As the title suggests, it’s a grand blockbuster of a film with an audacious scope. The action starts on an Earth which is slowly dying, moves through a wormhole to another galaxy and takes in two different planets with varying landscapes and challenges, and then plunges us into a black hole and out into a five-dimensional space.

The visuals are spectacular and the story is tense and exciting. There’s some twists and turns which are the trademark of Christopher Nolan films, where the meanings of things that happen early in the film only become apparent towards the end.

The science has a few holes in it and the character interactions and dialogue are occasionally stilted, with a bit of sentimental pseudoscientific talk of love being a powerful force that make me roll my eyes, but despite these minor flaws I was enthralled throughout the almost three hours of the film.

It’s a film that demands to be seen on a big screen in a cinema so if you get a chance, go and see it rather than waiting for it to come out on DVD.
