WARNING ABOUT DOWNLOADS IF USING CHROME
by Hazed
If you use the Chrome browser to surf the internet, you may have got a scary warning when you downloaded the basic workbench last week:
Oh no! Everybody panic!
In order to save the downloaded file you have to click on the arrow on the right of the screen, and select Keep from the menu.
This is part of Google’s attempt to keep you safe from malware, but it’s not much use because it’s going to end up labelling a whole lot of perfectly legitimate downloads as *DANGERGOUS*. That will just encourage people to ignore the warning anyway. Clearly Google haven’t heard the story of the boy who cried wolf.
In any case, the danger is not the downloading of a file, it’s when you run the download. If you didn’t intend to download the file you are not likely to run it just because it suddenly shows up in your download list; if you did mean to download it, it’s probably because you know what it is and you want to run it. Unless the browser has some way of distinguishing between a genuine file and a malware file – which it doesn’t – it’s useless.
You can turn off these thoroughly over-the-top warnings. The instructions to do so are on this Google page: https://support.google.com/chrome/answer/4412392?p=ib_download_blocked&rd=1.
