REAL LIFE NEWS: WEEPING MUSHROOMS
by Hazed
Mushrooms release spores in order to reproduce, and some species have been found to create their own breeze in order to spread the spores wide.
Previous work had demonstrated that some fungi make the breeze by releasing spores from thousands of cells at the same time, creating puffs of air. But now it’s been found that some mushrooms make the wind currents by releasing water vapour, to create their very own weather. The vapour cools the nearby air and creates convection, thus making a breeze.
This has been observed in capped mushrooms such as oysters, shitakes and the fly agaric, and there may be many more that use water to make their own wind.
Very efficient!
