PROGRESS WITH THE NEW LOCATION EDITOR

by Hazed

Alan has been working on a new version of the Fed location editor, which players use to design maps for their planets, or to amend the stock planet maps.

The redesign is necessary because the programming tools that Alan uses to design the workbench editors have gone through several different versions since the current one was released; besides, the interface looks a bit long in the tooth (or equivalent) these days and could use a metaphorical lick of paint to spruce them up and make them look more modern.

For those reading the news on the website, here’s a screenshot so you can see what the editor will look like:

Notable enhancements are buttons that let you specify the non-compass directions (up, down, in and out) as well as non-adjacent compass movements, by pointing to the destination square on the map. The map also shows any location that has a non-compass direction on it as blue.

Another change is that you won’t have to click an OK button to finish editing one location and move to another; the editor will automatically save the current location when you click away from it.

Alan is coding the new editor from scratch, which is a major undertaking. For that reason I can’t give you any idea of when it’s going to be released. Watch out for further updates in the Fed2 Star.
