A lot of people are worried about miscreants slipping drugs into their drinks when they visit bars or clubs. So-called date-rape drugs are odourless and colourless so it’s impossible to tell whether your beverage has been tampered with.
But now a new drinking glass and straw has been developed that can detect the drugs GHB, Rohypnol or Ketamine, and change colour if it finds them.
A former engineering student, Michael Abramson, was “roofied” unknowingly when out with his friends one night. As a result, he recruited the help of two professors from Worcester Polytechnic Institute to come up with drinking glasses and straws that change colour in the presence of the most common date-rape drugs. The product was then developed with the help of crowd-sourced funding via Indiegogo.
The drug-testing drinkware should be available next year.
