REAL LIFE NEWS: LICENSED TO KILL DRONES

by Hazed

It’s not quite James Bond’s license to kill, but the small Colorado town of Deer Trail is considering issuing a license and bounty so that hunters can shoot down drones.

The resident who drafted the ordinance that would create the drone hunting licenses, Phillip Steel, said, “We do not want drones in town. They fly in town, they get shot down.” Poetic!

The proposal says the license to hunt drones would cost $25, and it lays out the “rules of engagement” for bounty hunters:

The Town of Deer Trail shall issue a reward of $100 to any shooter who presents a valid hunting license and the following identifiable parts of an unmanned aerial vehicle whose markings and configuration are consistent with those used on any similar craft known to be owned or operated by the United States federal government.

Wannabe bounty hunters have to speak English, and be over 21. There are also restrictions on the weapon that can be used to annihilate the invading drones: it must be a “shotgun, 12 gauge or smaller with a barrel length of 18 inches or greater” and firing lead, steel, or depleted uranium shot. “Glass, salt, flechette, ball, slug, sabot, bolo, and exploding ammunition may not be used.”

You might imagine from this proposal that drones are a persistent problem for the residents of Deer Trail. But no - Steel admits that he has never seen a drone flying over the town. But, he says, the ordinance is “symbolic”.

“I do not believe in the idea of a surveillance society, and I believe we are headed that way,” he said.

The town board will consider the drone hunting ordinance in August.
