As if stress isn’t bad enough, now it turns out it gives you grey hair.
Scientists studying mice have found that stress affects the cells which produce melanin, the pigment which controls hair and skin colour.
When skin is damaged, the cells move from the base of the hair follicle, where they normally reside, to carry out repairs. Now the scientists think that stress causes the cells to migrate in the same way, and also prevents them from returning. The absence of the cells in the hair follicle causes the hairs to go white.
So the more stress you are under, the fewer of these melanocyte stem cells remain in the hair, so the greyer you will go.
The shock of this news story is enough to turn your hair white overnight!
