MISJUDGED STUNT OF THE WEEK: HOW NOT TO PROMOTE A MOVIE

by Hazed

The manager of a movie theatre in Jefferson City, Missouri, wanted to drum up publicity for the opening of Iron Man 3. He certainly did get publicity - although perhaps not the kind he wanted.

His idea? To hire several people to dress up in full tactical gear and storm into the screening waving fake weapons.

What could possibly go wrong?

Well, obviously the people watching the movie were upset by this. They must have thought the theatre was genuinely under attack. It's less than a year since a gunman shot up the screening of the Batman movie in Aurora, so it's not like their fears were completely unreasonable.

Those outside the theatre who saw the combat-ready people walking in through the doors were also thrown into a panic. One army war vet says it triggered his PTSD.

The local police department were not at all happy to receive calls from worried members of the public. "We received a series of 911 calls stating that a man dressed in all black and body armor and a rifle was walking into Capital 8 Theaters," Capt. Doug Shoemaker told the local Fox affiliate.

"Everything was in place, it's the opening night of a superhero movie, it's somebody walking in all-dark clothes, everything pointed to bad things about to happen," Shoemaker added, referring to the Aurora movie theater shooting. "There's really no good that can come of this."

The police point out the biggest problem with this ill-judged publicity stunt. What if someone with a concealed weapon had thought this was a genuine shooter event - and had opened fire in self-defense?

But the manager still thinks the stunt was a good idea, claiming that only a few patrons were upset. Oh, that's all right then.
