DUMB CRIMINAL OF THE WEEK: PHONE DUMPER

An armed robber who has been described as ‘unsophisticated’ has been caught after he carelessly dropped his mobile phone.
40-year-old Jason Rochford used a knife to threaten staff at a building society in Stockton-on-Tees, England, and then made off with £2,500. He dumped his hat, trousers and a coat close to the scene but accidentally left his mobile in one of the pockets.
When police found the phone and realised it belonged to the robber, they looked through the list of contacts and found an entry for ‘mam’. They rang up his mother, and were able to figure out who he was. Turning up at his house they found most of the stolen loot in the kitchen.
Even if he hadn’t discarded his phone, he clearly didn’t realise that his discarded clothes would have contained his DNA. He already had 83 offences on his record so would have been in the police database, making him easily identifiable.
He has been jailed for five years after admitting the robbery and having an offensive weapon.
