REAL LIFE NEWS: ROBOCOP ZERO, DRUNK ONE

by Hazed

If you’re worried about the rise of the machines, and fear that robots may take over, you will no doubt be concerned at the proliferation of droids being used by police forces. We are all scared of robocop going out of control!

But in this story, a pair of mechanical police were no match for one drunken man.

Last weekend, police were called to an incident in Waverly, Ohio. A 62-old old, who was reported to be heavily armed, had fired a shot and threatened some people. None of them were hurt but the officers of the law considered the situation serious enough that they sent in a high level unit called “Strategic Response” which included two robots intended for use in major siege operations.

Several residents were evacuated from the area, and then the robotic siege machines were sent in to tackle the drunken miscreant.

One of the machines successfully entered the bedroom in which the man was holed up, but was not able to subdue the man, so its larger robot colleague was sent in. But the gunman repelled its attack by firing at it with a small calibre pistol. It was only when a human member of the Strategic Response team intervened that the man could be overpowered.

So you can stop worrying about the machines taking over - for now, at least.
