REAL LIFE NEWS: COMET ISON IMAGES
by Hazed
Comet Ison is zooming across the Solar System heading for the sun, and later this year it’s going to be visible from Earth. Meanwhile, NASA’s Deep Impact spacecraft has taken some images of the comet.
The spacecraft was 493 million miles from the comet when it took a series of images over a 36-hour period in mid-January. The pictures were snapped by the Medium-Resolution Imager. They’ve been stitched together into a short movie which you can view at the source link below.
The comet is still more than 474 million miles from the sun, but it is already active, with a tail extending more than 40,000 miles. By the end of December, when it comes as close to Earth as it is going to get – about 40 million miles away – we should get a good view of it, assuming it doesn’t break up or fade out early.
I can’t wait!
