REAL LIFE NEWS: MAPLE SYRUP SHORTAGE AVERTED
by Hazed
You can breathe a sigh of relief. Your breakfast pancakes will not be served naked. The potential shortage of maple syrup is no longer a risk. Phew!
If you didn’t know there was ever a chance you’d run out of maple syrup, then you obviously didn’t read about the syrup heist in the summer. Syrup worth $18 million was stolen from a strategic maple syrup reserve operated by the Federation of Quebec Maple Syrup Producers. Thieves drove trucks into the compound and siphoned off the equivalent of 16,000 barrels.
The thefts went unnoticed until an inspection of stocks in September.
Quebec produces something like 80% of the world’s supply of maple syrup, and this heist put a big dent in its reserves. So it’s with relief I can report that Canadian police have collared about 20 people who were involved in the great syrup heist, with another seven still on the lam. About 70% of the stolen syrup has been recovered.
So our pancakes will not be dry – what a relief!
