REAL LIFE NEWS: GROW A TACHE TO PREVENT CANCER

by Hazed

This month is Movember, when men are sponsored to grow moustaches to raise money for men’s health (specifically, prostate and testicular cancer). A whole bunch of the males in the office where I work are taking part – at times it feels like I’m surrounded by Mexican banditos!

So it’s great timing that new research from Australian scientists shows that growing facial hair can protect you from skin cancer.

You’d think this was common sense. After all, the advice we are all given is not to expose your skin to the sun too much, so covering part of your face with fur surely does the job of covering up. But now we know that the common sense is true.

Researchers from the University of Southern Queensland used dosimetric techniques – instruments that measure the skin and indicate how much radiation it absorbs over a given period of time. They discovered that those with facial hair had reduced their skin’s exposure to the sun by roughly a third. The longer the hair, the better protection it provides against skin cancer.

Of course, it will only protect your face... if you habitually run around without a shirt then presumably your risk of getting skin cancer remains pretty high! Unless having a very hairy chest provides similar protection...

Thanks to Djentsch for tipping me off to this story.
