REAL LIFE NEWS: SEE, I TOLD YOU COMPUTERS ARE GOOD FOR YOU!

by Hazed

As men approach their twilight years, the ones that use computers are less likely to suffer from dementia than those who don’t.

New research by the University of Western Australia’s Centre for Health and Aging followed 5,506 men aged between 69 and 87 for up to eight and a half years. The study was a general health study looking at a whole lot of things, but one of the topics considered was computer use.

The participants were asked: “How often do you use a personal computer?” with answers ranging from “never” to “every day”. When the responses were analysed, the conclusion was that “Computer users had a more active social network and were less likely than non-users to show evidence of clinically significant depressive symptoms or medical morbidity”, and that “dementia for computer non-users and users was 13.3 per 1000 persons per year”. Incidence of dementia among computer users was 40% lower.

So all power to the silver surfer!
