REAL LIFE NEWS: YOU CAN HIDE THOSE LYING EYES
by Hazed
The Eagles were wrong when they sang You Can’t Hide Those Lying Eyes. The popular belief that when people lie, their eye movements give them away, turns out not to be true.
Looking up and to the right is said to indicate a lie, while glancing to the left means an honest statement, psychologists have thought. But experts from Edinburgh University and Hertfordshire University have tested this theory and found out that it’s poppycock.
The idea was tested by filming volunteers as they told the truth, or told a lie, and recording their eye movements. A second group of volunteers then watched the films and tried to tell who was lying by watching the eye movements. They failed.
In a follow-up study, the researchers examined videos of high-profile press conferences in which some people were later found to be lying when they, for example, appealed for help in finding missing relatives. Once again, there was no correlation between the eye movements, and whether the speakers were telling the truth or telling porky pies.
So how do you tell if someone is lying, if not by their eye movements? Check out the source article below - it’s got a sidebar listing 5 techniques to sort the fibbers from the truth-tellers.
