ARE THE CRASHES OVER?

by Hazed

We may have some good news. At the time of writing (Friday morning), Alan is zeroing in on one of the causes of the crashes so by the time you read this, they may be fixed. Fingers (or equivalent digits) crossed.

The resolution came about thanks to information from players Kinther and Djentsch, who were both diligent in giving us reports about what they were doing when the game crashed. Just goes to show that when I nag you to send in your crash reports, there’s a good reason for it!

They both identified that the problem was related to logging back into the game after you’d lost the connection to the server, so that the game still thought your character was present. Armed with their reports, Alan has been examining the relevant section of the code and has pinpointed the erroneous section, and can now fix it.

Thanks to both Kinther and Djentsch.

Update:
Hold the front page! Stop the presses!

[The newsdroid leap into action, bringing the digital press shuddering to a halt in a cloud of virtual smoke, accompanying by screeching noises as the binary gears graunch against each other. They attach metallic shears to their appendages and snip zeroes and ones out of the stream and discard them, then splice in new data and start the press up again.]

Alan has put new code into the game which fixes this problem. It hasn’t made the crashes go away completely but it should have nailed the primary cause. Meanwhile, he’s going to continue with his debugging to try to find any other reasons the game is falling over.
