REAL LIFE NEWS: SEE, I TOLD YOU MEETINGS WERE BAD FOR YOU

by Hazed

Meetings are so boring. You can feel your lifeforce draining away as you listen to your boss droning on incomprehensibly, and your colleagues trying to score points by pretending they understand what’s being said.

And don’t get me started on meetings that include PowerPoint presentations!

Now some new research shows that meetings make you stupid. A team from the US organisation Virginia Tech Crilion Research Institute has found that after a meeting, people’s performance in IQ tests is considerably lower than those who make their own decisions and don’t have to go to meetings.

The effect is worse in women than in men.

“We started with individuals who were matched for their IQ,” said Read Montague, who led the study. “Yet when we placed them in small groups, ranked their performance on cognitive tasks against their peers, and broadcast those rankings to them, we saw dramatic drops in the ability of some study subjects to solve problems,” Montague said.

Thankfully in my current job, I am in a department of one - me - so I don’t have to suffer through endless meetings. Just as well.
