REAL LIFE NEWS: GOOGLE FINDS, THEN DESTROYS, ATLANTIS

by Hazed

Did you know that Google maps pinpointed the location of the lost city of Atlantis? At least it did until recently, when the company decided to cover up its existence, presumably under instruction from sinister government forces.

Actually, what happened is that the latest update to Google Earth cleared up a software error that had previously displayed what looked like a grid on the floor of the ocean between the Canary Islands and the mid-Atlantic ridge. After people spotted this strange display, Google explained that it was formed by a processing glitch caused by overlapping data sets.

The internet being the hotbed of conspiracy theorists, of course, people jumped all over this and took it as proof that the lost city of Atlantis actually existed.

The idea of a lost civilization on an island in the Atlantic ocean is a lovely daydream, but there is no consensus about where it was, and advances in the theory of continental drift and undersea mapping techniques rather put the kibosh on it.

Shame.
