REAL LIFE NEWS: THE EMBARRASSMENT OF SLEEP TEXTING

by Hazed

You've heard of sleep-walking. You're probably also familiar with sleep-eating. But this one is new to me: sleep texting.

Apparently, more people are sending out text messages in their sleep. It's common now for people to use their phones in bed before they go to sleep so they are easily to hand should they suffer from this newly-identified disorder.

16-year-old Elizabeth Hammond is one of them. She doesn't realize what she's doing until her friends talk to her next morning: "You sent me a text message at three in the morning and I didn't know what you meant by it."

Luckily, so far, all she has texted are random letters and words - nothing too embarrassing.

Not so one unnamed youngster who found herself sleep "sexting" - sending compromising photos of herself while she was asleep.

Sleep expert Dr Marcus Schmidt expects to see more of this behaviour. "Four out of five kids that have cell phones sleep with the cell phone in the bedroom, next to their bed and only one in ten actually turn it off," he said.

He recommends leaving the cell phone elsewhere to ensure you get a good night's sleep - and don't start using the phone in your dreams.
