REAL LIFE NEWS: OLD WEST SHOW GOES A BIT TOO WILD

by Hazed

In the Wild, Wild West it was a lawless time, but nowadays when people stage re-enactments of Old West gun battles they have to be mindful of health and safety.

But something went a bit wrong in a mock gun duel in South Dakota, when live ammunition was fired instead of blanks - wounding several tourists.

The Dakota Wild Bunch re-enactors perform several times a week in Hill City, a tourist town in the Black Hills. But a few weeks ago, with more than 100 spectators watching, a 49-year-old member of the troupe fired four live rounds. Two of the crowd had serious injuries and two more minor wounds.

The local sheriff's office and police department are investigating, along with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. They will try to reconstruct what happened and determine if the live ammo was used by accident or intent, and whether any criminal charges should be brought. Until they conclude their investigation, they aren't saying anything much.

Officials from Hill City are keeping quiet, too, but they have suspended the simulated gun fights.
