REAL LIFE NEWS: SPACE ART

by Hazed

Usually one thinks of science and art as being separate fields with very little overlap. But NASA is one of the few scientific agencies that has made an effort to bridge the gap.

For a start, there are the many photos taken on the various missions by humans and by robots. We've seen stunning images of the Earth from space and from the moon, lunar landscapes, the Martian deserts, astronauts on space walks, and further afield the images from spaceprobes and space telescopes. The pictures were taken for scientific reasons but were also devoured by a fascinated public.

But that's not the only way NASA has brought art out of science. They established a program in the middle of the last century, at the start of the space race, that gave artists access to their facilities and projects. Now, an exhibition called NASA | ART: 50 Years of Exploration has been touring the US and is curently at the National Air and Space Museum in Washington DC.

The exhibition will be at the museum until the Autumn and then will move on to other museums. You can read about it, and look at some of the pictures, here: http://www.thespacereview.com/article/1854/1.
