REAL LIFE NEWS: ROBOT, GAS, BEANBAGS AND TASER NEEDED TO CATCH CRIMINAL

by Hazed

When police were confronted by a sword-wielding man they responded with a whole arsenal of non-lethal weaponry, including a robot, some gas, a beanbag gun and a taser.

It started when a County sherriff's deputy went to serve a court order on Michael R Beach, in Edgewater, Maryland. When the deputy found him, Beach lunged at him with a sword, then barricaded himself inside his home.

For the next few hours, police tried to communicate with him, but with no success. They sent in a remote-controlled robot to try to talk to him, but that didn't work. I don't know why - technical problems, or did Beach refuse to communicate through a machine?

Later, police deployed a "chemical agent" and then entered Beach's home. The found him with a wound to his torso, but still clutching the sword, so they fired beanbag rounds at him in an attempt to subdue him. But that didn't work either, and he retreated into the bathroom.

So then police resorted to using a taser, and this did work; they were able to take him into custody and then to hospital to have his self-inflicted wound treated.

Beach has been charged with intent to murder, assault, reckless endangerment and related counts. I have no idea what the original court order was all about, but surely it wasn't for anything as serious as this!
