REAL LIFE NEWS: PRINT ME A SNACK

by Hazed

3D printers have been getting more useful, printing out real objects by building up layers of plastic. But now a team from new York's Cornell University has been experimenting with printing out a different kind of substance: food. They've created dishes with ingredients such as chocolate, hummus and turkey.

The foodstuffs are turned into a paste and then loaded into the printer, in place of ink. They can then be squirted through the nozzles, and layer texture upon texture to create an edible 3D object. The software that controls the process allows fine detail so delicate food sculptures could be created.

The project is a collaboration with the French Culinary Institute, based in New York City. Among the masterpieces they have created is a miniature space shuttle made out of ground scallops and cheese.

Read more about it, and see a picture of the scallop space shuttle, here.
