REAL LIFE NEWS: SEE, I TOLD YOU ALCOHOL WAS GOOD FOR YOU, PART 9,372

by Hazed

More good news: not only does alcohol protect your heart (see last week's Star at http://www.ibgames.net/fednews/110227/official04.html ), new research now tells us that booze staves off the onset of senile dementia.

A German scientist has just published a paper which examined the cases of 3,202 old people, all aged 75 or over, living in Germany. During the three years of the study, 301 of the subjects died and 217 developed dementia (about half of this group suffered from Alzheimer's disease and the others from different kinds of dementia).

What the researchers found was that alcohol consumption was "significantly associated with a lower incidence of overall dementia and Alzheimer dementia". In other words, the people who remained dementia-free were more likely to be drinkers.

As these studies usually conclude, it's moderate drinking that seems to have the positive effect. Heavy drinking causes memory problems and can cause neuro-degenerative disease, the scientists say, which presumably would counteract any lesser risk of Alzheimer's disease.

So as I get older I will continue to consider the fine wines that I imbibe as medicinal, rather than recreational. Cheers!
