REAL LIFE NEWS: AFTER 200 YEARS, CHAMPAGNE STILL TASTES GOOD

by Hazed

Champage that's 200 years old, and has been salvaged from the sea bottom, isn't fizzy any more. But it still tastes OK. That's the verdict of a journalist who got to taste some that had been salvaged from a shipwreck.

The wreck was discovered in July in the Baltic sea, near a wind-swept archipelago between Sweden and Finland, by a group of divers. Researchers say the ship was probably carrying its precious cargo from northern Germany to the west coast of Finland when it sank, in the early 1800s.

168 bottles of champagne have been raised from the sunken ship. Connoisseurs haven't been able to date it precisely, but it's from the early 19th century, and has been remarkably well preserved. 20 people were invited to a tasting of the vintage drink, and you can read one journalist's impression here.
