REAL LIFE NEWS: DUSTY ASTEROID LUTETIA

by Hazed

Asteroid Lutetia is covered in a thick blanket of dust. That's the news from the Rosetta probe which did a close flyby of the giant asteroid in July.

The first data to emerge is that aeons of impacts from other bodies have pulverized the rocky asteroid, shattering its surface so its texture is much like that of the moon. It has a dust layer at lest 2,000 feet deep.

You can read more about the initial findings, and what scientists expect to discover as they analyse all of the Rosetta data, here, where you can also see a picture of the asteroid. I don't know about you, but I find it quite amazing that we can see photos of other planets, moons, asteroids and so on in this much detail!
