REAL LIFE NEWS: STICKY CASH BOX COULD FOIL ROBBERS

by Hazed

A security firm has invented a new kind of cash box which could foil armed robbers: it fires exploding glue all over the money when its broken into.

The boxes are being used in a pilot scheme in London, where there have been 167 cash-in-transit robberies in the last six months, and 485 last year. That's a lot of money stolen!

Existing cash boxes pour a vivid dye over the money inside them if robbers break them open, but although that helps police to track down robbers, it doesn't stop the money from being used in machines. So the sticky glue-extruding box would be a vast improvement because it would turn the stolen cash into "dead money" that could not be used. There would therefore be less motive for criminals to steal the cash boxes.

Detective Chief Superintendent Graham McNulty, head of the Flying Squad (a division of London's police) said they were hoping to cut cash-in-transit robberies to the level of bank raids - only 10 banks were robbed in London last year, and in four of those the criminals didn't get away with any money.

The boxes are being trialled by security firm G4S Cash Solutions. The company's Risk Director, Kevin O'Connor, said, "Our tests show that the glue will ensure that an attack on a G4S cash box will be completely worthless to the perpetrator."

If the trials are a success, the boxes could be used all over the UK.
