Many people love a jolt of caffeine, whether from a strong coffee or a slurp of cola. Many of those people rely on the wake-up effect to get them going in the morning. But most of them don't know exactly how caffeine makes you more alert.

This fascinating article explains what we know about caffeine's affect on the brain. It's not so much a stimulant, that makes the brain work faster, instead it blocks the brain's propensity to slow down, thus stopping you from falling asleep.

The article includes a video showing somebody having a brain scan when they are deprived of caffeine, and then after they've drunk some coffee. There's a big difference in the amount of blood flow to the brain - which accounts for the fact that caffeine withdrawal gives you a headache.
