REAL LIFE NEWS: CRIMINAL IDENTIFIED FROM HAND PHOTO

by Hazed

Having a multi-million-megapixel camera in your mobile phone is a great thing, allowing you to snap pictures of fantastic quality, but one criminal recently discovered that the high quality of his phone photos led to his arrest and conviction for handling stolen goods last week.

The case involved some stolen watches, which were very rare. They were lifted when thieves broke into a house in Stalybridge in England last month. A 17-year old girl was assaulted during the incident.

As part of the subsequent investigation, a criminal called Stephen Taylor was arrested and his Sony Ericsson W995 mobile was siezed and examined. Police found on it pictures of the watches stolen in the raid. The watches were being held in the palm of a hand - and fingerprint officers were able to zoom in on the ridge details of the hand and get detail fine enough to match the picture to Taylor's palm print.

This was enough to lead Taylor to plead guilty to handling stolen goods, and he has been sentenced to 10 months in prison.
