REAL LIFE NEWS: WHY WERE THERE NO WOMEN ASTRONAUTS?

by Hazed

Once upon a time, there were no astronauts. Then the space race started and NASA had to consider who it should recruit to fly its rockets. The early cadre of astronauts were all men, of course – at the time no-one would have ever considered allowing women into the gang, because of the sexist attitudes at the time.

Actually, that’s not really true. The reason there were no women astronauts wasn’t because they didn’t think women would be suitable, but because of other selection criteria. You can read all about it in this fascinating article on the New Scientist website.
