EVENT EDITOR PROGRESS

by Hazed

In last week's Star, I told you that Alan was working on a new version of the event editor which would be robust enough to release to players, so POs could write events to make fun things happen on your planets. I concluded the article by saying:

"I can't estimate how long it will be until it's ready to be given to players, because there is still a lot of work to do, and then it has to be thoroughly tested, but I will keep you posted as things develop."

When I wrote that, I thought it would be something like a month before we'd have anything ready to release. But after the Star was published, Alan gave me an update on his progress - and it turns out he's a lot further along than I thought! (It's typical that he held off telling me this until after I had written the news; he did that on purpose to annoy me, I am sure!)

The final version of the editor will allow you to do a lot of different things on your planet so you will be able to replicate most of the events I have written for the Sol planets. However, when we first release the editor it will have a subset of the functions - the most common things you will use when you write events. Then Alan will add more and release further versions, until finally the full functionality will be available.

The first release will allow you to:

  • send messages to players
  • send announcements to specific locations
  • move players around the map
  • check a player's gender and do different things depending on the result
  • check whether the player is the planet's owner - ie, you! - so you can fence of areas of the planet under development or make yourself a private area that nobody else can access.

You will also be able to instruct the game to make choices about what happens by picking at random from different options.

There is an extensive manual that will teach you how the event system works and how to use the editor to write events for your planet. This is one function where you HAVE to read the manual - events are complicated, and if you try to figure it out on your own, you'll make a mess.
