REAL LIFE NEWS: ANOTHER REASON WHY MARRIAGE IS BAD FOR WOMEN

by Hazed

In a bad marriage, it's the woman who suffers damage to her health, a new study shows. US psychologists have discovered that the wives in tense marriages are prone to risk factors for heart disease, stroke and diabetes.

Men, on the other hand, remain relatively unscathed and seem to be immune from such problems.

The study quizzed 276 couples who had been married for an average of 20 years, asking them to fill out questionnaires designed to assess the good and bad aspects of married life. The researchers then rated the participants for how depressed they appeared to be, based on self-reported systems.

After that, doctors carried out a battery of tests, designed to check whether or not the volunteers were showing signs of symptoms pointing to a raised risk of serious disease. The collection of symptoms is known as metabolic syndrome. The result was that women whose marriages were in trouble were more likely to be depressed, and more likely to have a grater number of symptoms of metabolic syndrome.

Although men in similar marriages were also depressed, they didn't show such marked signs of damage to their physical health.
