IT'S NOT A BUG, IT'S A FEATURE...

by Hazed

The law of unintended consequences has just thrown up something very amusing. Players can, of course, choose to wear objects that you would not logically wear - the cheese, for example, or even a marsrat! But some objects when worn didn't look right at all. One experimental fashionista who decided to wear a carton of milk on her head found that she looked like this:

Pugwash is wearing:
Some milk. Desc by events

Whoops! This was an unintended consequence of the fact that some objects don't have a proper description written into the "description" field in the object database - instead, the description is handled by an event which kicks off when a player types the 'EXAMINE' command. There are two reasons why an object might have an examine event on it: if the description is too long to fit into the very stingy space allowed for it, then I sometimes use an event to send the text instead, so I can give reign to my verbosity. More importantly, sometimes what an object looks like varies depending on circumstances. For example, the milk object is a carton that contains several servings of llama milk, and when you examine it, it tells you how much is left. That's done by events.

When I put an event on an object to replace the description, I have - until now - put the words "Desc by event" into the object's description field as a placeholder. Unfortunately, that's the text that the 'WEAR' command is picking up and showing to other players!

This problem affects quite of lot of objects, including the umbrella you find on the Earth monorail, and the tiny hadron collider charm on sale from Gallaghers right now. So I have gone through all the Sol objects and replaced that placeholder phrase with something more sensible, and as of today's reset, you shouldn't see "Desc by event" any more. If you do, it means I've forgotten about an object, so please email feedback@ibgames.net (and don't forget to put Fed2 in the subject line) to report it.
