YOU WEAR IT WELL

by Hazed

Alan has almost finished revamping the way objects are displayed and has reinstated the 'WEAR' command, which now works in a different way. The command determines how objects show up when other players look at you. There will also be a few new commands coming next weekend to give you even more options about displaying your valuables.

When you first pick up an object, are given it by another player, or acquire it in another way, it's stored in your inventory in such a way that nobody can see you are carrying it. The assumption is that it's in your pocket or otherwise concealed about your person.

You can then decide which of your objects you want to show to other players - they will see these when you look at you. You choose which of the objects you want to wear with the command 'WEAR objectname', and you are not limited to just one object - you can wear a squid-skin hat, a spidersilk shawl and a coat of many colors all at the same time. Obviously this would logically apply to items of clothing or jewelry, or perhaps security badges, but in fact you can wear any object in your inventory - a cheese, a butterfly net, a rib bone... well, fashion can be strange! Objects you are wearing will be marked as such in your inventory.

To stop wearing an object, use the new command 'DOFF objectname'.

So now, when somebody examines you, this is what they see:

>ex pugwash
Pugwash is dressed in a nondescript grey coverall, like most of the rest of the population.
Pugwash is wearing:
A tin foil hat charm. This tiny tin foil hat is made from the highest-quality crumpled silver foil, shaped to fit a teeny little head. A twisted wire coathanger pokes out of the top, acting as an antenna to both receive and deflect signals.
A gold star. The twinkling gold star is an award from the demi-goddess Hazed for services to Fed DataSpace. Give it a rub and it will shine even more brightly.

And in your inventory, your objects are marked like this:

>i
You check out your personal kit - a comm unit (the screen glows with a premium ticker logo), a ship permit, and that seems to be it.
You have with you:
stardust
cocktail stick
catnip
cheese
tin foil hat charm [wearing]
gold star [wearing]
6 objects
You also discover a sticky blob of used chewing gum. Yuk! You get rid of it by sticking it on something else.

Right now, the information about which objects you are wearing is not stored across the reset, so you will need to use the commands again when you first log on the next day. That will change next week so that thereafter, the game will remember what you are doing with your various objects.

There will be two other sets of commands that will go in next weekend: 'CARRY' will display items you are carrying in your hands (or equivalent), with 'POCKET' putting them away again, and 'CLIP' will dangle things from your keyring with 'UNCLIP' doing the obvious. More information about these commands in next week's Star.

The manual and in-game help files will be updated with these new commands once they are all implemented. Meanwhile, have fun showing off your possessions!
