REAL LIFE NEWS: YEAH, BUT DRUMMING REALLY IS HARD WORK, RIGHT?

by Hazed

New research has proved what rock drummers have been claiming all along: it's not an easy job. In fact, it requires the stamina of a top athlete such as a footballer.

Tests were carried out on the drummer from the band Blondie. Clem Burke drummed for 90 minutes, which raised his heart rate to 190 beats a minute. One of the researchers, Dr Marcus Smith from Chichester University, explained that drummers need extraordinary stamina, and that an hour in concert could burn off 400 to 600 calories.

While top footballers are expected to perform once or twice a week, he said, drummers on tour would be pounding away every night at a different venue. "It is clear that their fitness levels need to be outstanding - through monitoring Clem's performance in controlled conditions, we have been able to map the extraordinary stamina required by professional drummers."

The project was conducted jointly by the University of Gloucester and the University of Chichester. A dedicated "drumming laboratory" is now being built at the Gloucester campus and it is hoped that other professional drummers will be tested.

Maybe this is why Spinal Tap's drummers kept on meeting with bizarre accidents - they weren't fit enough for the job!
